A very pleasant course. Well worth a visit.
La Cañada was the first municipal golf course on the Costa del Sol in 1982 and was originally a nine hole course. In 2001 it was extended to make an 18 hole course and has become a very popular course representing very good value for money. There can not be many municipal golf courses that have been designed by Dave Thomas and Robert Trent Jones.
This is the story of the village that wanted a golf course. When they got one of nine holes they asked for more, and more. Guadiaro used to send its men to the fields then along came Sotogrande. They became green keepers and took up golf. Before long there were more golfers in Guadiaro than in any village of its size in Spain.
They hacked out a mountainside track and the kids practised near the football pitch. Jaime Ortiz Patiño got interested, the municipality gave the land, Robert Trent Jones Sr. the design and La Cañada was built. Over a decade later, with a lot of financial help from the tee programme and JOP, the second nine holes was opened, this time designed by Dave Thomas. Now that’s some municipal golf course! And now there’s the clubhouse! La Cañada is busy and the locals get preference so visitors need to book in advance. It’s well worth the effort.
Over the past few years this course and the general area has grown, it has become very popular and therefore attracted the eye or the developers, so new construction has begun with many new developments offering a range of apartments in general.
